Bridging the Gap: Critical Media’s Role in Strengthening Alerts and Enhancing Disaster Preparedness
The "Early Warnings for All" (EW4All) initiative under the Sendai Framework aims to address these shortcomings, ensuring that no one is left vulnerable during disasters. To achieve this objective, it is crucial to resolve several gaps, with media playing a pivotal role in the process.
When disasters strike, people often rely on local radio, television, or community messaging groups like WhatsApp for information, rather than on formal government alert systems. Media acts not only as a loudspeaker for warnings but as a trusted intermediary between experts and the public.
Session objectives
- Put a communication map assessment (both in normal times and in case of major crisis) within the strategic objectives of each national EW4All action plan.
- Promote the development of clear, accessible, and inclusive communication frameworks for Early Warning for All (EW4All) including evaluating and mapping communication tools, address accessibility gaps and ensuring that technical systems reach last mile communities.
- Spread around the community awareness of best and worst practices existing in the field.
- Facilitate a discussion among media practitioners to analyze successes and failures in Early Warning Systems.
- Develop actionable strategies and recommendations for improving the coordination, accessibility, and effectiveness of Early Warning for All to enhance disaster resilience globally.
Outcomes
- Changing behaviours among the media professionals
- Strengthening partnerships between media, governments, and DRR agencies for coordinated messaging.
- Investing in inclusive communication (e.g. sign language, Braille, audio alerts.)
- Initiate a debate at the national level among media and the institutions in charge of National DRR plans and strategies./Encourage national level discussions between media and DRR institutions for resilient infrastructures.
