Equity in Action: Early Warnings for All People

Early Warning Systems are a known, cost-effective way of achieving Targets A, B and C of the Sendai Framework, reducing risks to disasters and preventing losses from climate-related hazards. The session will take a highly participatory approach, focusing on how to ensure that diverse community perspectives and needs are integrated into the design and delivery of all components of an EWS, fostering systems that are responsive and adaptable to the needs of all.

The session will follow Sendai Framework guiding principles by facilitating meaningful cross-sector collaboration across EWS stakeholders in state and non-state roles, alongside inclusive engagement across society. The session will be set up to support evidence-based, risk-informed, and inclusive decision-making, considering multi-hazards and risks. It will promote social equity, cross-sector collaboration, and future-proof governance structures that prioritize marginalized communities most at risk from climate change

Session objectives

Whilst our ability to predict extreme weather is improving, EWS often fail to reach the most vulnerable. Those on the front lines of climate change frequently lack the right information, delivered in the right way, with enough time to act.

  • This interactive session will bring together participants from across the Early Warning Early Action value chain to understand the diverse needs, priorities, and barriers to accessing EWS.
  • Through group activities, participants will co-create inclusive, future-proof strategies that ensure early action for at-risk populations, saving lives and livelihoods.
  • The session aims to improve understanding, provide guidance, and stimulate critical reflection on how to prioritise gender equality, accessibility and inclusion in EWS to manage current and future risks, leaving no one behind.
