Voices for Resilience: Indigenous Perspectives on Disaster Risk Reduction
Local, traditional and indigenous knowledge are highlighted in both the Sendai Framework and the Sendai Framework Mid-Term Review. Too often, the voices and perspectives of indigenous peoples are overlooked or not taken into consideration in decision-making practices, despite a tremendous wealth of accumulative knowledge.
This one-hour session will bring together representatives from indigenous populations with a view to consolidating a global collaboration aimed at the following:
- Leverage the bridge between indigenous knowledge and state-of-the art science and technology to foster safer, more risk-informed and resilient communities.
- To stimulate, and encourage the collection, preservation, and exchange of information and knowledge among Indigenous communities and partners in disaster risk reduction and related areas from across various regions.
- Active and adapted participation encouraging Indigenous Populations to develop strategies and methodologies tailored to their cultural context, integrating both local knowledge and innovative risk Speakers:reduction practices.
Session objectives
- Establish a core working group for articulating indigenous communities from various regions interested in sharing and exchanging knowledge on disaster risk reduction and related themes.
- Define key and priority areas for collaboration until the next Global Platform for DRR and for the 5 final years of Sendai Framework’s implementation.
- Define roles and responsibilities as well as contact details for the global indigenous knowledge & DRR alliance next steps.
- Carry out an exchange of successful experiences on DRR issues among the indigenous communities that are part of the network.
Outcomes
- Key priority areas and contacts for moving forward.
