GP2025 Sustainability

Environmental sustainability is a critical element of disaster risk reduction

GP2025 strives to minimize negative environmental impacts and inspire for change

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Government of Switzerland aspire to organize a sustainable eighth session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, that will minimize negative environmental impacts and provide benefits to local hosts and the general public. UNDRR recognizes the inherent linkages between the natural environment and disaster risk reduction. As a member of the United Nations family, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and to lead by example, as highlighted in the UNDRR Environmental Policy. This includes a commitment to organizing environmentally sustainable meetings. To this end, we will implement the measures outlined in the UN guidance for sustainable event management, aiming to minimize negative environmental impacts and leaving a beneficial legacy for hosts, the public and all involved.

Minimizing negative impacts and creating a positive legacy

The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will be implemented as a sustainable event, balancing environmental, economic and social responsibilities. The GP2025 aims to:

  1. Reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with venues, travel and resource consumption. Measuring and offsetting unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions is a crucial step in supporting the sustainability of the GP2025.
  2. Reduce the consumption of water, energy, and other resources before and during the conference.
  3. Reduce the generation of waste and encourage recycling and repurposing of unavoidable waste. Strive to avoid the use of single-use plastic.
  4. Reduce indirect environmental impacts on air, water, and soil.
  5. Ensure accessibility, inclusion, and well-being of all participants and staff.
  6. Increase the social benefits for all involved, at the local, regional and global level.
  7. Leave a positive sustainability legacy and inspire for change.

The links between environment and DRR are also emphasized in the GP2025 programme, with specific sessions being organized on these topics.
