SS1: Comprehensive approaches to reduce loss and damage: Bridging climate action and disaster risk reduction

This session will focus on addressing the rising impact of climate-related disasters, which are disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. With economic losses surging and climate risks escalating, the session will explore how DRR strategies can help avert and minimize loss and damage. Participants will discuss the importance of integrating climate action, development and DRR efforts to enhance resilience and reduce the effects of slow-onset events and non-economic losses. The session will also highlight progress in loss and damage mechanisms, including funding arrangements and technical support, and emphasize the need for better data, collaboration and financing. Key outcomes will include demonstrating the impact of DRR on loss reduction, improving access to financial resources, and strengthening collaboration between climate and DRR mechanisms to support vulnerable countries and communities.

UNDRR Focal Points:

  • Ms. Loretta Hieber Girardet
  • Mr. Animesh Kumar
  • Ms. Le-Anne Roper

Guiding Questions:

  1. How do actions to avert, minimize and address loss and damage accelerate progress to achieving the goal of the Sendai Framework?
  2. What are the key means through which loss and damage mechanisms seek to build resilience of countries and communities? How do these work, or can work better, in synergy with disaster risk management?
  3. Building on the first high-level dialogue, how can complementarity and synergy in loss and damage funding arrangements be enhanced? How can we best leverage the diverse range of DRR and adaptation financing instruments?
