From Paris to Sendai: The Fundamental Connection of Climate and DRR

As climate-induced disasters intensify worldwide, the integration of climate action and disaster risk reduction (DRR) frameworks has never been more critical. This spotlight session at the Third Stakeholder Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025) explores the vital intersection between the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework, with a special focus on the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage. This workshop represents a crucial opportunity for stakeholders to voice community-level perspectives and needs regarding loss and damage technical assistance. The insights gathered will directly inform the special session on the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage scheduled for June 5.

This workshop has been developed in coordination with the SEM AG and SEM Climate Change working group. We understand that stakeholders on the ground need more information about the functionality of the Santiago Network as well as their ability to participate as OBNEs. This session aims to address those gaps.

Session objectives

  • Create a basis of shared understanding on the intersection of DRR and climate disasters
  • Describe where the Sendai Framework fits into and informs the UNFCCC processes, particularly via the Santiago Network
  • Create space for stakeholder to voice the needs of folks on the ground when it comes to loss and damage technical assistance
  • Shared understanding of overlap between Paris and Sendai frameworks
  • List of whole-of-society demands for the special session on the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage planned for June 5
