TS6: Turning Experience into Action: Learning from Large-Scale Disasters

Large-scale disasters expose vulnerabilities in systems and highlight the urgent need for actionable strategies for resilience and recovery. "Learning from experience" involves applying insights from past events to strengthen preparedness, response, and recovery. This approach emphasizes building back better, fostering collaboration across sectors, and prioritizing vulnerable populations through innovation and inclusivity, ultimately creating sustainable disaster management systems resilient to future shocks.

Session objectives:

This session provides an opportunity to reflect on the lessons learnt, recognize progress made, and address the gaps that still hinder effective disaster resilience. By doing so, it aims to contribute to a renewed commitment to disaster risk reduction and recovery readiness, how the effectiveness of “Build Back Better” strategies can be monitored and evaluated over time, ensuring that future generations are better equipped to face the challenges of a rapidly changing risk landscape.
