Dialogue Among National Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction – Enhancing disaster risk reduction governance by 2030

National Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) are unique country-led, multi-stakeholder coordination mechanisms that play a key role in implementing and monitoring disaster risk reduction at the national level, leveraging collective expertise and ensuring a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach to risk governance. These platforms have been central to advancing Target E of the Sendai Framework, which calls for increased national and local DRR strategies. They promote policy coherence across DRR, climate change adaptation, and sustainable development and support alignment with local-level efforts, such as municipal DRR platforms.

With the rising complexity and intensity of disasters driven by climate change, there is an urgent need to strengthen National Platforms—making them more proactive, accountable, empowered and effective—to close implementation gaps and accelerate resilience building at all levels.

As a direct response to the call of the Sendai Framework Midterm Review’s Political Declaration to make disaster risk reduction governance a core priority, the Dialogue shared experiences, best practices and approaches to accelerate the implementation of the governance aspects of the Sendai Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Objectives:

  1. Learn from National Platforms about their experiences, successes and demonstrated impact in boosting the Sendai Framework implementation at national level;
  2. Review barriers and challenges faced by National Platforms and the role they play in fostering domestic DRR coordination and integration with development, humanitarian and climate change considerations and in securing political commitment to optimize DRR decision-making and resource allocation;
  3. Enhance National Platforms’ awareness and knowledge on available tools and guidance to support and scale up national DRR activities and deliveries. Provide hands-on practice to enhance a clear understanding of UNDRR’s qualitative assessment tool’s operationalization and added value.
