The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is a multi-stakeholder forum
This global forum is an avenue to share knowledge and discuss the latest developments and trends in reducing disaster risk
The UN General Assembly recognizes the Global Platform as a critical mechanism to review progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. At the Platform, governments, the UN system and all stakeholders get together to identify ways to further accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework. Since 2007, seven sessions of the Global Platforms have taken place, including the 2022 session. The outcomes are recognized by the General Assembly as a contribution to the deliberations of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), held each year in July and thus, contributing to risk-informed implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
WHAT IS GP2022
The seventh session of the Global Platform (GP2022) was organized and convened by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) from 23 to 28 May 2022, in Bali, Indonesia, hosted by the Government of Indonesia. The event was co-chaired by the Government of Indonesia and UNDRR.
The Global Platform takes place at a critical time: seven years from the adoption of the Sendai Framework and just over two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This global crisis has exposed how underlying vulnerabilities and inequities have catastrophic consequences for the most exposed across the world. Prevention and the risk reduction agenda are essential if we are to achieve a sustainable future for all. The 2022 Global Platform has provided a unique and timely opportunity to showcase the importance of international solidarity and cooperation, as well as to discuss ways to tackle underlying risk drivers both locally and globally. Additionally, it has explored how to strengthen disaster risk governance and how to build stronger systems for managing all types of risks. GP2022 offers a chance for governments, UN system and all stakeholders to recommit, with urgency, to accelerate progress on disaster risk reduction towards the achievement of sustainable development.
The GP2022 agenda has been guided by the Sendai Framework goal, priorities for action and targets, the key priorities identified at the previous Global Platform held in Geneva, Switzerland in 2019 as well as those stemming from the Regional Platform meetings. The GP2022 has taken stock of Sendai Framework implementation, recommend actions for policy makers, highlight good practices and raise awareness. The outcomes have been synthesized in the co-Chair’s summary and will contribute to the inter-governmental midterm review of the Sendai Framework scheduled for 2023.
The UNDRR is the focal point for disaster risk reduction within the UN system. It oversees the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and convenes and organizes the Global Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction.
