MSP4: Harnessing strategic foresight and innovation to accelerate disaster risk reduction for future generations

This session will serve as a platform for Governments and stakeholders to report on progress in using potentially transformative and innovative approaches like strategic foresight, among others, to invest in long-term resilience and well-being of future generations. The plenary will also hear perspective on the potential of AI and other emerging technologies to advance the implementation of the Sendai Framework.

Guiding Questions

Delegations are requested to focus their 3-minute intervention in the multistakeholder plenary on the following questions.

  1. Strategic Foresight is a discipline decision-makers use to gather and process information about possible future scenarios and guide transitions towards more desirable futures. In the context of increasing complexity and uncertainty, can you share a case of a critical policy decision or investment your government or organization has made using the principles of strategic foresight? If strategic foresight was not explicitly used, an example of a decision which was guided by long-term resilience and safeguarding the wellbeing of future generations is also welcome.
  2. Please outline two or three areas of disaster risk reduction implementation for which your department, ministry or member state government see the greatest potential in using technologies, including emerging technologies, to advance implementation of the Sendai Framework?
  3. In your context, what particular measures will be necessary to incentivise and drive innovation in reducing disaster risk? Please be specific in providing the top 3 measures or enabling factors.
