TS1-2: From data to action: Strengthening the understanding of disaster impact data and its application in decision-making

Increasingly frequent and intense events fuelled by climate change are resulting in devastating long-lasting impacts. Loss of life and health, food insecurity and famine, loss of biodiversity, increased displacement, social, economic and environmental losses are being felt throughout the world, undermining progress towards sustainable development. Against this backdrop, disaster-related data and statistics are critical to understanding root causes, drivers and impacts of disasters, in order to make informed development decisions. While the importance of data is widely acknowledged, challenges remain in the application of these data for evidence-based decision-making. This session will unpack the barriers that prevent data from becoming decision intelligence, and promote diverse perspectives on what data governance must look like to enable interoperability, collaboration and effective data-sharing.
