What is the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction?

The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is the main global forum to review and discuss progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030), aimed at reducing disaster risk and building the resilience of communities and nations. Since 2007, seven sessions of the Global Platforms have taken place. The outcomes are recognized by the General Assembly as a contribution to the deliberations of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) contributing to risk-informed implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Who organizes the Global Platform for DRR?

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the focal point for disaster risk reduction within the UN system. It oversees the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and convenes and organizes the Global Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction. The eighth session of the Global Platform (GP2025) will be convened and organized by UNDRR and hosted by the Government of Switzerland.

What are the objectives of the Global Platform for DRR?

The Global Platform was established in 2006 and is recognized by the UN General Assembly Resolution 61/198 as the global multi-stakeholder forum for assessing progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR, as well as to share practice and knowledge on disaster risk informed policies, programs and investments, including on development and climate issues. The GP2025 agenda is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction goal, priorities for action and targets, the key priorities identified in the Political Declaration of the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework in 2023 as well as those stemming from the Regional Platform meetings.

How does the Global Platform for DRR link to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement?

Disaster risk reduction (DRR) is an integral part of social and economic development and risk-informed development. The Global Platform will aim to align with and reinforce the DRR-related achievements and the recent outcomes of global policy processes, such as those related to the 2030 Agenda for sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda, Addis Ababa Action Agenda, Programmes of Action for LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS. In addition, the forthcoming global deliberations, including at the 2024 Summit of the Future and the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in 2025 will be important opportunities for mutual policy synergies.

What are the linkages between the Global Platform and the Regional Platforms?

Global Platform 2025 will be closely linked with the Regional Platforms (RPs) held in 2023 and 2024. The 4 RPs that will take place in 2024, along with the RP held for Americas and the Caribbean hosted by Uruguay in 2023, will play a crucial role in mobilizing governments and stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework at the regional level. The outcomes of these RPs will feed into the sessions of the GP2025, particularly those related to the stocktaking of achieving the goals and targets of the Sendai Framework.

What is the Sendai Framework for DRR?

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (Sendai Framework) was the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda and provides Member States and stakeholders with concrete actions to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risk and to ensure a more sustainable and resilient future.
